The Close

I have been painting a dinner table that is sealed and that requires 4 people to be fed in strange ways (possibly without use of their hands, I haven't decided). People will poke their faces out of the black holes, which will get cut out. Each panel is part of a cube. I think it will be amazing and AVANT garde. This is the painting:

Found photo of a bride leaving the house on the streets of Miami.
Created a veil from fruit mesh and added a peep-hole from a bike’s retroreflector.

‘Birth of Betty’ Moonshine Cabinet

In 2017, I organized an art residency at my grandparents' home in Saranda, Albania. The house stands on a hill known as the ‘American District,’ named for the cluster of homes built with financial aid sent from expatriates to their homeland. My contribution to this residency was a diorama within a cabinet from the communist time, an intriguing piece of furniture that also contained a few jars of homemade moonshine.

I explored the theme of transnational identity through the iconic Betty Boop. Her apple face has accompanied many flags, represented many races and ethnicities. In Brooklyn, I have seen a Puerto Rican, Jamaican, and Dominican Betty in the course of a summer day. In the diorama, Betty transcends  cultural adaptability; she embodies beauty and freedom, Venus and the Statue of Liberty combined, her glowing rose a beacon above the Hudson River.

In 2020, I made a lantern with the same Birth of Betty motif.
It was accepted in a group exhibit at BRIC Arts Media in Brooklyn.
